You can see his comments on Germaine Greer's article about Thatcher at: http://joehendren.blogspot.com/2009/04/germaine-greer-on-thatcher.htmlRooksmoorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15563445039351828997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5850172499490375035.post-21105506966539775102009-10-28T21:30:54.396+00:002009-10-28T21:30:54.396+00:00God-or-whatever bless.

The closest you can come is the Khmer Rouge regime ("The Angka") with its slogan "The Angka has the thousand eyes of the pineapple" or some of the Juche slogans of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. For a closer match, you really need a death cult like the People's Temple or Aum Shinrikyo.

I think a lot of Orwell's messages could be replaced by saying you should cultivate and preserve a healthy sense of irony in your culture and population - which makes Graham Greene a lot more important than people realized at the time.

But nothing happens in a vacuum. The flip side of that is, had she never been born, another manipulative sociopath would have cheerfully taken her place.Marion Delgadohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09493068399042656060noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5850172499490375035.post-65450686358401724962009-05-21T14:25:09.482+01:002009-05-21T14:25:09.482+01:00Daniel, note that I only liken Margaret Thatcher t...Daniel, note that I only liken Margaret Thatcher to Adolf Hitler on ONE point alone and that is that she was a political opportunist. I think even her supporters would acknowledge that Thatcher was successful at judging political trends and promptly exploiting them in her own interests.

I made no other comparisons between Thatcher and Hitler. Hitler was a monster and Thatcher did not approach the policies that he did, I never claimed otherwise.

The comparison in the YouTube video to a fictional portrayal of Nazis was made by the 'Spitting Image' team, not by me.

Of course my posting comes from one particular perspective. All postings and articles come from the perspective of an individual, and are thus 'biased'.

For thirty years in the UK we have had to stomach Thatcherite propaganda year after year. Anyone who challenged it was portrayed at best naive and at worst as an 'enemy' to the state. It is about time we began to get coverage of other perspectives. We should not be made to feel guilty for speaking out against the divisive and unpleasant Thatcher did.

It is funny how those who support Thatcher see comments against her as 'biased' and their own views to be the 'truth'. I can argue the opposite and have millions of people who would agree with me.

The fact that you believe that 90% of what I wrote was 'absurd' indicates how successful pro-Thatcherite propaganda has been and continues to be. You can look at the facts, details of the riots, the levels of unemployment, the closure of industries, the tolerance of harsh policies in Northern Ireland. All of these facts are in the public domain, I did not make them up. Of course you could say, 'well, that was not to blame it was: other people/society/the global economy/the police' whatever you choose. However, the pro-Thatcher camp praise how much they see her, personally, as having done so you cannot then turn and deny these bad things did not have her at their base.

Millions of Britons suffered directly because what Thatcher did and many are still suffering the consequences of the society she actively promoted. Of course, someone will always benefit from whatever regime is in power. Under Thatcher those who benefited were those who were already privileged and they did so at the expense of people who were already disadvantaged. Under Thatcher we not only moved further from attempts at an egalitarian society but even the acceptance that striving for opportunities for all was wortwhile doing.Rooksmoorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15563445039351828997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5850172499490375035.post-31354684426348626982009-05-21T11:51:27.861+01:002009-05-21T11:51:27.861+01:00Be a bit less bias and a bit more realistic please...Be a bit less bias and a bit more realistic please... Comparing Thatcher to Hitler is just simply absurd, actually like 90% of what you wrote. And i hope Jake what you wish for Thatcher happens for you.

Thank you very much. :)Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11953416378547522242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5850172499490375035.post-64953854614089529112009-05-04T11:19:00.000+01:002009-05-04T11:19:00.000+01:00Jake, when I saw that a comment had been posted, I...Jake, when I saw that a comment had been posted, I worried it would be from a Thatcher apologist, so I was heartened that there others who see Thatcher for what she was. The speculation this week that she would be brought into the current government to tackle the economic crisis was truly horrifying. It is incredible how short so many people's memories are; she and her cronies may not have made the recession of the 1980s, but it is certain that they exacerbated greatly and made the average person suffer immensely for no purpose except the glorification and greed of the government's friends.

As you say Scotland came off the worst not only due to the crushing of the coal industry but through being used as the testing ground for the poll tax. It is no wonder there were no Conservative MPs left there after the 1997 election.

Rooksmoor.Rooksmoorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15563445039351828997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5850172499490375035.post-66969790638079556372009-04-13T10:02:00.000+01:002009-04-13T10:02:00.000+01:00Yammerhant, reflecting on your comment I was remin...Yammerhant, reflecting on your comment I was reminded on the response in the media to the death of British Fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley in 1980. The plaudits rained on him at that time were very well ridiculed by the 'Not the Nine O'Clock News' team in 1980. It is on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vrQS10cb0A

Unfortunately it is rather too slick and looks a little like an advert for Fascism, but the double standards of liberal media praising a dead Fascist is brought out well if you are alert.

The best one aimed at Thatcher still has to be the 'Spitting Image' version of 'Tomorrow Belongs To Me' broadcast on 11th June 1987, the day of the 1987 election:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReIAna459sg

The song originally sung by Nazis at the rural beer keller in the 'Cabaret' movie in 1972. Though it is a parody with puppets it sums up how scary the continued reign of Thatcher was by the mid-1980s.Rooksmoorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15563445039351828997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5850172499490375035.post-58109763430719822812009-04-12T15:09:00.000+01:002009-04-12T15:09:00.000+01:00Yammerhant, yes, I did. I am obviously fascinated by 'bitter legacy' in my titles:

http://rooksmoor.blogspot.com/2009/01/bitter-legacy-of-recession.html

I think I have been made very uneasy by seeing a lot of parallels between now and what I witnessed in the 1980s. Life seemed so unpleasant growing up then and like people who had lived through the Second World War, I really hoped there would be no repeat. I am optimistic (perhaps wrongly) that we can fight it off this time. I hope also that there are enough of us around from the 1980s to stop all that descent into ordinary people blaming each other and attacking 'the scroungers' and instead focusing our blame where the guilt truly lies.Rooksmoorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15563445039351828997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5850172499490375035.post-11903177160016884392009-04-12T14:57:00.000+01:002009-04-12T14:57:00.000+01:00Just you wait until the old horror finally expires...Just you wait until the old horror finally expires; I'm already dreading the tearful and sickening hypocritical eulogies and the endless wordage praising her "legacy".

You also reminded me of the air of impending apocalypse in the early 80s - did you write a post about that subject a while back?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
